Anchor is a new app/website that is like the Twitter for audio. We are going to put out some content related to CrossFit, nutrition, and fitness in general for both our members specifically and the greater population out there. Chris grew up playing all kinds of sports, but narrowed it down to soccer by high school. Regis HS in NYC was known more for its academics than its sports, so he went off to Villanova pursuing an engineering degree. There, Chris realized he wanted to work more closely with people so he graduated with a Masters in Counseling and worked as a counselor at Wissahickon High School (right down the road from CF Kanna).
It was in 2008 that Chris heard about CrossFit from his father-in-law. He followed CrossFit.com’s workouts in a regular gym, teaching himself the movements and scaling every workout for a long time. Without a doubt, this process has made him a better coach because he knows what it’s like to do the “beginner” version of CrossFit. He also realized that you don’t need to run long distances to get better at running. He set a PR running a half marathon by only running a total of 5 miles in the 30 days leading up to the half.
Chris officially joined a CrossFit gym in 2009 where he realized that having a coach watch and correct your form accelerates the learning process immensely. He started coaching in 2010 and loved it so much he wanted to open his own gym. Between coaching thousands of hours and dropping into dozens of affiliates around the country, Coach P knew he wanted to take the best of what he experienced to create his own community and culture.
Coach P and his wife, Kristin, have traveled a good deal which has contributed a great deal to the Kanna theme of exploring. They have trekked 40 miles to Machu Picchu; summited Mt. Kilimanjaro at 19,341 ft; and did a 100-mile camping trip around Mont Blanc, covering Switzerland, Italy, and France. They have a son, Connor, who likes to practice the olympic lifts with his PVC pipe and climb on everything.
Along the way, Chris picked up photography for his travels, but that evolved into taking pictures for the gym and eventually for family and wedding shoots.
Kanna is a culmination of Coach P’s experiences: using his engineering experiences to break down the physics of olympic lifting; to his counseling skills to hear how members’ days were; to photography which showcases their achievements; to his coaching and programming practice to provide a worthwhile experience in the gym – Coach P believes working out with a close group of people is the best way to be happy and healthy!
