Kanna Fitness’s May Member of the Month: Dave G.

When the coaching staff chooses the Member of the Month, we look for positive people willing to: learn, work hard, and have fun. Dave fits all of these criteria and more! Though he may come in tired or sore, Dave is always ready, willing, and able to put in the work each day. Sometimes he even surprises himself with what he can do! One day there were ring push-ups in a workout and during warm-up, Dave tried them. Let’s just say they didn’t go great, so he modified. But a few months later, they came up again and he handled them no problem! Similarly, he was out on a ski vacation with his family and found that he was able to keep up with his teenagers all day! Dave has seen great improvement in his capacity, but his biggest success is his consistent attendance. For all of these reasons and more, Dave G. is our May Member of the Month – congratulations!

Name
Dave Griffith

Occupation
Analytic Sales Specialist

When did you start CF?
June 2018

What are your favorite numbers and why?
8, 18 – these were the numbers my kids wore in baseball and softball

What CF movements do you like?
box jumps, squats (air, front and back), running, rowing

What CF movements do you dislike?
the bike and burpees

What sports or fitness things did you do before CF?
a little running, a lot of walking

How did you find CF? What was your first workout?
Brynn convinced me to go – I don’t recall my first actual workout, because I really don’t think I understood what was going on. I do recall struggling to do 5 sit-ups!

What’s your favorite thing about CF?
I love the workouts and the way the people in the class support one another. My favorite time is when there is a big class and everyone finishes the workout, the music stops and there is almost complete silence (except for everyone trying to catch their breath). In most situations in life, you don’t get the chance to give your all and see everyone around you give theirs – even though it is just a workout there’s something really cool about that moment.

What are your hobbies?
I don’t do any one thing like 100% (except CF – LOL). I do a little skiing, play a little golf (only with my kids), do a little boating, do a little fishing, I like to cook, I recently started brewing a little beer.

What’s something most people don’t know about you?
I am pretty much an open book. My general go to on this question is that when I was about 13, my family and I (4 of us) built a cabin in the woods in Maine. It was my Dad’s dream, he passed away a couple of years ago, but was able to spend about 30 summers there and it is still a very special place to our family.

What PRs or accomplishments are you most proud of?
No major PR’s. I am most proud that I get myself there 3-5 days a week, given my track record of not working out, getting there and going as hard as I can is a bit of a PR. I am proud that I can now do a ring dip or two, ring pushups and was able to do some knees to elbows in a workout last week!

What’s on your CF bucket list?
I will someday do a pull up.

What’s on your general bucket list?
I’ve traveled all over the world, gotten to do some really special things, right now my bucket list includes enabling my kids to be the best they can be. Also, and I know this sounds kind of lame, I really want to take a long river cruise throughout Europe.

What advice do you have for new (or experienced!) CrossFitters?
Show up, be open to feedback, ask questions and embrace the people – everyone is there for basically the same reasons, they want to stay or get in better shape and hang out with other people doing the same thing. Also, once the workout starts, no one is paying attention to you and at the end (because of scaling/modification), they are all going to be just as whipped as you are!!

How does one become Member of the Month? By embodying the mission of Kanna Fitness of Learning, Working Hard, and Having Fun. By contributing to the community and supporting others in and out of the workout. By being open to coaching and improving oneself for the sake of being better, not to “win” the workout. By just generally being a good person and having a positive attitude. And a lot more, but you get the idea!
